Scale Up and Down your Autonomous Database with Zero Downtime

In this short article, you can learn how to scale up and down your Autonomous Databases based on your business needs.

There are two different ways to scale your Autonomous Database:

  • Add CPU or Storage on demand
  • Enable Auto Scaling option

Let’s explain both ways to scale the resources from your Autonomous Database.

Auto Scaling is one of the most popular capabilities on Oracle Autonomous Databases. You don’t need to worry about scaling up or down your databases based on your business needs. You need to enable the Auto Scaling option and forget about peak workloads.

Auto Scaling is enabled by default when you create an Autonomous Database instance, or you can use Scale Up/Down on the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure console to enable or disable Auto Scaling.

Auto Scaling option is not available as part of Oracle Cloud Free Tier. Just keep that in mind when you create your Autonomous Database instance.

With Auto Scaling enabled, the database can use up to three times more CPU and IO resources than specified by the number of OCPUs currently shown in the Scale Up/Down dialog. When Auto Scaling is enabled, if your workload requires additional CPU and/or IO resources, the database automatically uses the resources without any manual intervention required.

Add CPU or Storage on demand and Enable Auto Scaling option Steps

Open the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Console by clicking the burger menu next to Oracle Cloud.

Click Oracle Database section; depending on your workload, click one of the following workload types: Autonomous Data Warehouse, Autonomous JSON Database, or Autonomous Transaction Processing.

Select any of your Autonomous Database Instances from the links under the Display Name column.

From the Details page, click Scale Up/Down.

On the Scale Up/Down menu, select the change in resources for your scale request. You can adjust CPU Core Count and Storage (TB) using the arrows next to each field to adjust the correct selection.

To enable the option, select Auto Scaling.

Click Update to change your selection.

The resources will be added, reduced CPU Core Count, Storage, or enabled or disabled Auto Scaling. The status of your database will change from:

To:

As a result, the changes will be applied.
